Life laughs as it walks past my table at lunch
I stop eating my chicken salad sandwich
And follow it out the front door
Eyes follow my figure as I leave
When I turned around
The school was no more
But a memory
Life laughs as it pokes me while my body rests
I wake with wide eyes and a flowing mind
And I open my door to feel its warmth
I check if my sister is still asleep
When I turn around
Our rooms are no more
But late goodnight wishes
Life laughs as it sprints down the steep grassy field
I jump off the swing set and kick up mulch
And don’t say bye to my mom as I go
Happy and filled with questions
When I turn around
The playground is no more
But a lost imagination
Life laughs as it consistently rings in my ears
I smile up at the school bell on the wall
And walk to my next class
The last in these halls
When I turn around
The ringing is no more
But a reminder of passing time
What if I never had to leave the memory
What if I wanted to talk wishes till dawn
What if the imagination never vanished
What if reminders of passing time is a gift
Life smiles, just as I do, at the what if’s.
They are waiting for me to notice as I walk by.
